After three seasons, the SyFy channel has decided to cancel “Defiance,” to the disappointment of fans everywhere. When the announcement was made, many assumed that the massive multiplayer online (MMO) game would follow suit, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The “Defiance” online game will not only continue, but might have a longer lifespan than its source material.

The “Defiance” game launched back in 2013, with its release coinciding with the premiere date of the television show, reports GameSpot. The tie-in MMO was released for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Originally, “Defiance” was a paid MMO, but later turned into a free-to-play online game, which has proven to be successful for developer Trion Worlds. This is a popular route that MMO games like “DC Universe Online” and “Marvel Heroes” have taken and both of themhave yielded positive results.

What made the “Defiance” game stand out was how closely weaved the show and game was. Often times, events that would happen in the show would immediately impact the game or vice versa. SyFy described it to Polygon as an immersive cross-platform experience, an experience that had plenty of fans who will now be sad to see the show go.

It’s interesting, seeing the game live on without its source material. In cases like this, the source material is usually gone for an extended period of time, like the “Firefly” game for example.

Though “Defiance” will live on, no one knows if it will live on for too long. Granted, both the game and television series have a strong fan base and developer Trion Worlds has considered bringing the game to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, but no concrete plans have been revealed yet.

That being said, there should be enough content on the last-gen versions of the “Defiance” game to please fans everywhere. Online users should expect plenty of tributes in the game, dedicated to the end of the hit SyFy show.

“Defiance” is available now and is free for anyone to try out. The MMO has in-game purchases for those who want the best gear and an advantage over everyone else, while others can simply grind through the game.
