This week on the new ABC comedy series “Black-ish,” it’s Mother’s Day and Andre’s sister Rhonda is coming to celebrate the occasion with the family. Meanwhile, the kids are thinking of a good gift for Rainbow.

Andre Johnson’s mom Ruby has been staying over for a while and now that it’s Mother’s Day, his sister Rhoda and her girlfriend Sharon are coming over to celebrate. The problem is, Rhonda is a lesbian and Andre refuses to talk about it. Even worse, their mom Ruby has been pretending to be blind to the fact that her daughter is gay.

Rainbow thinks that Andre should talk to his sister more and be open about her relationship and gender preference. She also thinks that it’s about time for Andre to talk to their mom about Rhonda. Andre wants to hear nothing of it and insists that he and his sister have a good relationship. He doesn’t want to rock the boat.

Rainbow decides to do her own thing and bond with Rhoda even if Andre doesn’t want to talk about serious things with her. Rainbow learns that Rhonda and Sharon are getting married but they decided not to invite Andre and Ruby. When Andre finds out about it, he starts to reconsider his relationship with his sister. His colleagues tell him that he should talk to her and tell her that he’s cool with her gender orientation. Andre agrees and sees that it’s the only way that he can have a real relationship with his sister.

Back at home, Andre speaks to Rhonda and tells her that he’s cool with her and Sharon getting married. Rhonda is thankful and decides to finally invite him and his wife. Unfortunately, Andre decides to go overboard and tells Ruby that Rhonda is gay.

Ruby freaks out and continues to stay in denial. She keeps saying that it’s just a phase that Rhonda will grow out of. Rhonda gets mad at Andre for outing her to their mother so tactlessly. Ruby is also angry at Andre for being the bearer of bad news.

Ruby threatens to walk out and disown both of her children. Andre is resigned to the idea that both his mom and his sister will no longer speak to him but he spots them talking outside. Ruby eventually relents and accepts Rhonda’s situation. They kiss and make up and being the good mom that she is, Ruby expresses her support to Rhonda and agrees to come to the wedding.

Meanwhile, the other mom in the house, Rainbow, is also getting some love from her kids. Diane hijacks some of Jack’s gift ideas for her and Rainbow loves them. Jack fights back and gives a tearful show of pretending to be only able to give Rainbow a hug. Rainbow comforts him and tells him that a hug is worth much more than any material gift.

Jack outsmarts Diane on this rare occassion but she will surely get back at him next time. “Black-ish” returns every Wednesday night at 9:30 pm on ABC.
