When Bandai Namco released the video of “Galaga Tekken” on April 1, many thought it was a very effective April Fool’s joke, as the idea seemed weird at best and forced at worst. However, a recent trailer for “Galaga Tekken” has proven that the title wasn’t a joke game after all and that the mobile game would be coming out later this month in Japan for iOS devices.

According to Siliconera, the game is being made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “Tekken” series. The popular fighting game had been around since the days of the original PlayStation and has proven to be a huge success, garnering seven sequels that have continued the storyline of the Mishima bloodline, from Heihachi to Kazuya and most recently Jin.

Still, many do find the decision to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary by re-releasing the famed 2D shooter “Galaga” a bit of an odd decision. After all, the series has never really had any previous attachments to the incredibly popular shooter in the past and the fact that “Tekken 7” is getting an arcade release sometime this year should be reason to celebrate enough.

Then again, the “Tekken” series is no stranger to doing video game crossovers. ‘Tekken 3” for example had manga character Gon in the game, who was a cute little dinosaur that looked a bit out of place in the fighting title. The characters from “Tekken” have also fought the characters from Capcom’s “Street Fighter” franchise in “Street Fighter X Tekken.”

“Galaga Tekken” plays like the classic “Galaga” videogame, which is what most fans are expecting from the mobile shooter. The only difference so far seems to be the fact that players will be using “Tekken” antagonist Heihachi Mishima to shoot the various enemies instead of a rocket ship. Also, instead of shooting aliens, Heihachi will be shooting various characters from the “Tekken” franchise.

Pocket Gamer has also confirmed that classic Namco character Pac-Man would be making an appearance in the game as a power-up. When activated, the round yellow creature appears and eats a good number of the opponents, before disappearing again. Pac-Man has interacted with “Tekken” characters before in the previously mentioned “Street Fighter X Tekken,” where he was a playable character, along with Cole McGrath from “Infamous” and Capcom’s blue bomber “Mega Man.”

“Galaga Tekken” will be coming to Japanese iOS devices on April 30 and will be a free download. There haven’t been any announcements on whether the game will be hitting Western shores or not.
