While Apple is gearing up for the much awaited release of the iPhone 6, a research conducted in the U.K. suggested that iPhone catches both the eyes of its fans as well as thieves.

The study analysed crime data in London between August 2013 and January 2014 and it was found that the iPhone model of smartphones were the target of thieves in England and Wales.

The Home Office that compiled the theft ratio of mobile phones showed that iPhone 4S, 5, 5C and 5S were stolen the most along with the Blackberry 9790. The list also included HTC and Samsung.

Due to Apple introducing strong security measures in most of their phone the level of theft were reduced said the research.

Easy target for thieves were people in the age group of 14 to 25 years including women who, most likely left their phones unattended for a while or they were pick pocketed in person.

These thefts were a cause for concern to the present coalition government, though crime rate has come down said Home Secretary Theresa May. People carry their lives in their pockets with bank details and other sensitive personal information that are accessible through mobile phones. She went on to add that it is a necessary for the government, police and the industry to work together to tackle this crime.

Mobile phone companies have also taken steps to combat this crime by introducing features to track and wipe out personal data if the phone is stolen.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales said that there were 742,000 mobile thefts in both places last 2012 and 2013. Almost 100,000 cases of mobile phone theft were reported to the Metropolitan Police in London alone in the year 2013.

With Apple updating its iOS 7 with new security features, the number of iPhone thefts has reduced said the Metropolitan Police.

In an interview with BBC, Apples spokesperson said that with the launch of Find My iPhone in 2009 customers can remotely set a password or erase all their personal data. He also added that iPhone has a feature called Activation Lock that does not allow others to use the iPhone if it is lost. This helps to keep the device secure even in wrong hands and also improves the chances of recovering it.
