Apple fans have been waiting for an OLED iPhone for a while now. The company is reportedly introducing one this year, but it is likely to come with a premium price as OLED panels are quite expensive. The other new and upcoming iPhone variants are unfortunately going to be stuck with their current LCD panels, and stay that way for a couple more years.

Previous reports indicate that Apple is set on including an iPhone variant with an OLED display in its 2017 iPhone line-up. The Mac maker is expected to release three iPhones this year, with two furnishing LCD screens, which are the same ones that are presently used by the current flagships, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. According to a new report, fans will have to wait until 2019 before Apple equips all of its iPhones with OLED displays.

A new supply chain report states that the Cupertino, California-based company intends to utilise OLED panels for each iPhone model by 2019. Apple is projected to furnish approximately 60 million units of the iPhone 8 with OLED screens this year. That equates to about 40 percent of the tech giant’s overall manufacturing run, according to The Bell.

The new report says that Apple is going to double the application of OLED displays for next year’s iPhone line-up. The year 2019 is supposedly going to be the first time that consumers get to buy a new iPhone without LCD displays. Samsung and Interflex are said to be responsible for manufacturing the flexible printed circuit boards (FPCB) that are going to be used for the iPhone 8.

The iPhone 8 has gained an incredible amount of hype for months now due to the fact that it could be the first Apple smartphone to use an OLED display panel. The upcoming handset is reportedly going to sport a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge curved display similar to that of the new Samsung Galaxy S8 (see related story below). Fans are expecting for it to be feature-packed since this year marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

Aside from the edge-to-edge OLED curved front screen, the iPhone 8 is expected to feature enhanced front and back cameras, as well as an all-glass back cover. The premium iPhone is also likely to have wireless charging support, cutting-edge biometrics, the latest A11 processor and an IP68 rating, which would allow the handset to be plunged underwater 1.5 metres deep for half an hour.
