Abbot prepares reply on gov't's budget
Opposition Leader Tony Abbot on Thursday will release a reply on the budget while making an impression on the voters.
Several sectors and groups expressed their disappointments over the federal government's budget which was disclosed on Tuesday, however, it also received positive comments for highlighting its focus on getting the nation back-on-track on surpluses sooner than expected.
The government delivered and assured a “no frills” budget, but Mr. Abbot is compelled not only to reply on the budget but also to offer an alternative.
Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner on Wednesday challenged Mr. Abbot to identify some saving strategies to fund his election campaign.
“Come up with some detail, to come up with some specific, costed saving,” Mr. Tanner said.
Mr. Tanner criticized Mr. Abbot for continuously attacking the federal government's proposals on its new resource tax and not airing out specific details and “direction” of its economic strategies in his speeches to shed some insight on the voters.
He asked, “Why does the prime minister only become an economic conservative at election time?”
The coalition group will continue to lobby to block the super profits tax on mining companies.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, on her part, further suggested to revise the said tax to give some leeway on some companies.
