Backpacking can be very fulfilling and educational activity, whether you are traveling alone or with a group. However, many backpackers, especially amateur ones, make a few basic mistakes that can hinder the trip or even cause physical discomfort. Here are some tips on how to backpack properly.

1. Packing too much

Many expert backpackers go with the saying, "Take half the stuff you need and twice the money." Traveling light is the first rule among backpackers. It is better to buy the things you need while on the road than bring too many things that end up not getting used at all. Consider the dimensions and weight of the items you will bring and get rid of the bulky ones.

2. Squeezing in too many destinations in your itinerary

Planning is recommended but backpackers should avoid trying to visit too many places will only cause you to spend more time on public transport or walking. Take time to explore the sights and spend time mingling with the locals or trying local delicacies. These should be the centerpiece of your travel.

3. Failing to forecast

Planning the trip will involve knowing the weather conditions, trails to take and public transportations to ride. These can save you a lot of time and help avoid common inconveniences. Bring maps and stay updated on weather forecasts.

4. Bringing too many gadgets

Some backpackers carry too many unnecessary electronic devices that only consume space in their backpacks or get ruined under bad weather conditions or the roughness of the trip. Some expert backpackers advise you to bring a flashlight, cellular phone and a portable GPS system. Extra batteries for these are recommended, too.

5. Leaving their credit cards

On several occasions, you will be required to pay in cash or credit card. Prepare the needed currency when traveling in foreign places. Two or more credit cards will also come in handy when purchasing items abroad. Also prepare the necessary documents when crossing borders such as your passport and visa. Always bring a couple of identification cards for safety reasons.

When starting out, seek advice and tips from expert backpackers. Beginners should plan short trips in the beginning, consisting only of a few destinations.
