An 11% on mining tax should do - Fraser
Treasurer Andrew Fraser of Queensland told media on Thursday he sent several department officials to deal with the super profits tax with the Federal Government representatives today.
The Federal Government included a 40 per cent on super profit tax for mining companies on the budget.
Mr. Fraser proposed that the profits should be slashed down to 11 per cent instead.
He said the proposal will be relayed and discussed by Queensland Treasury officials who are now in Canberra.
"Obviously we've met with the industry - I've met with them on the public holiday after the Henry [Tax] Review was released and on a number of occasions since then," he said.
"I'm absolutely confident and I know that the Federal Government is acutely aware of our views on this."
The Queensland treasurer is positive the federal government will listen to the appeals as they are aware of the views by the different groups concerned.
However, Opposition Leader John Paul Langbroek hinted that both Mr. Fraser and Premier Anna Blight should be present during the discussions today.
"I made the offer yesterday in a bipartisan way that I'm happy to go to Canberra with Anna Bligh to negotiate on behalf of Queenslanders to say this super tax has got to stop," he said.
Several mining groups in Queensland condemned the mining tax profits as it will trigger a loss of investments not only in Queensland but also for the rest of the State.
Premier Blight recently said the Rudd government should revise the mining tax instead.
