After causing a stampede in Sydney and New York, Pokemon Go claimed its first fatality in Australia. A Sydney woman, 22-year-old Tanami Nayler was killed on Saturday morning after she was hit by a stolen car and dragged 70 metres.

Nayler was sideswiped by a Toyota Corolla running at 100 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone at about 2:15 am while she was on a pedestrian crossing on the corner of King and Victoria streets in West Melbourne, but she apparently paused playing Pokemon Go because her phone was in her pocket, reports News.com.au. She was actually a New Zealander who lives in North Melbourne.

The driver of the vehicle, stolen from a nearby rental company, was driven by Nicholas Davidson, also from New Zealand, who fled the accident scene. He was later charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, failure to render assistance, burglary and theft.

After dragging Nayler 70 metres, the vehicle crashed into another set of traffic lights. The Age reports that 30 minutes before she was hit, Nayler texted her mother in New Zealand that she arrived safely in Melbourne. She left a nightclub in the city and was on her way back to her friend’s house when the accident happened.

But Tanami’s mother clarifies that her daughter was not playing the virtual game when hit by the stolen car. She describes her daughter’s sudden death as dreadful. The mum adds she and her husband are devastated by the tragedy.

The parents plan to pick up her daughter’s body in Melbourne and bring her back to Noosa for the funeral after the coroner releases Nayler’s body. Nayler left Noosa in 2013 and worked in Sydney as a customer service manager for a brand.
