According to a spokesperson of the Winehouse family, the adoption rumors circling around the late singer are completely "false".

Yesterday, news broke out that Amy Winehouse was in the middle of adopting 10-year-old Dannika Agustine during the time of her death. The girl from St. Lucia, a destination island in the Caribbean, confirmed the allegations by speaking out to The Mirror, saying "Amy was already my mother. I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter". Despite reports that Winehouse has already hired lawyers to process the adoption, a spokesperson for the Winehouse family says "There's no truth to it". The question now is this: where did the story come from and who confirmed it?

Clearly, the deceased singer was enamored with the Caribbean girl during her lengthy stay in the island for the past years. Dannika, although believed to be driven by poverty, has a huge family supporting her including a grandmother named Marjorie Lambert. Lambert runs a beach bar where the late singer frequented, the reason behind Dannika and Amy's photographed times together. Labert even told The Mirror that the singer was "determined and serious" to pursue the adoption of Dannika, whose single mom currently struggles to find a regular job. Just shortly after the adoption news broke out, offended readers commented on the hilarity of the report, one even saying "If this kid was going to be adopted by this drug addict, then something is wrong with the adoption laws".

Entertainment portal E! Online suggests that Dannika's family were offered a substantial amount by the tabloid to confirm the story, even if there is no truth behind it. According to the site, the reason why the family agreed to do the story is the poverty that has been crippling them for the past years. It is also believed that Dannika mistook the singer's affection for a motherly love, hoping that someday Amy would take her to London to start a new life.
