“Vikings” season 5 promo has already been released. It seems that a new chapter in the story of Vikings will begin now.

In the last season, Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) sons avenged their father’s death. They killed King Aelle (Ivan Kaye) and King Ecbert (Linus Roache). However, the quest for power and fame still continues. Next season will be all about the Lothbrok brothers. A lot of differences will crop up between them. Moreover, Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who was introduced in the finale episode of season 4, will be a great threat to Vikings, especially Ivar (Alex Hogh Anderson). Here’s all that we know about season 5 so far.

It begins with the burial of Sigurd

“Vikings” season 5 episode 1 will begin with the burial of Sigurd (David Lindstrom), who was attacked and killed by Ivar in the last season. He attacked him with a battleaxe, which hit him in the stomach. The mystery as to why Ivar killed his own brother will be unveiled in the next season. “I think if memory serves Season 5 begins with the burial of Sigurd,” showrunner Michael Hirst told Variety.

Ivar weeps, regrets killing brother

“Ivar is weeping and saying he never meant to do it,” Hirst continued. In the last shot of the scene in which Ivar attacks Sigurd, he looks shocked as if he didn’t want to kill him. Furthermore, the released sneak peak of the season 5 also shows Ivar weeping during Sigurd’s funeral. He definitely didn’t want to kill his brother. (Watch the promo for season 5 on the link below.)

Rollo and Floki will be back

Rollo (Clive Standen), who has missing on the show in the last few episodes (after Ragnar’s death), will be back next season. He was last seen carrying out the Mediterranean mission along with Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig).

Furthermore, Floki, who left his brothers to sacrifice the rest of his life to the gods, will also be back in season 5. However, his journey will be different from how it has been so far.

“They haven’t gone at all. They’ll be back, absolutely,” Hirst told the Hollywood Reporter. “Floki was similarly destroyed by the death of the three people closest to him: his daughter, Ragnar and Helga. Floki is going to commit himself to the gods. His previous life is over — he might as well be dead. The new season will find him submitting to the will of the gods,” Hirst told Variety.

Heahmund against Vikings, particularly Ivar

Now, the new threat that waits for the Lothbok brother, Ivar, in the forthcoming season is Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Talking about the new character in “Vikings” season 5, Hirst said that warrior bishops were real and so was Heahmund, according to history.

“These are the precursors of the Knights Templar. They’re princes of the church — real church men, very intelligent — but when the church was threatened, they put on that armor and fight,” he told Screener TV. He also said the Heahmund was well-known. However, he died in a battle.

Kattegat will attract more battles

In the last season, Egil (Charlie Kelly) attacked Kattegat on behalf of King Harald (Charlie Kelly). The showrunner says that the land will attack more battles in the forthcoming seasons. “[King Herald trying to attack] Kattegat is like the low-hanging fruit; it’s the trading station that is very attractive to other Vikings and other kings and so it will remain. It will always be under threat.”

“I’m writing way down now in season five and Kattegat is still up for grabs; people are still fighting about it. It’s still an important location for us,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

Ragnar’s sons are going to fall out

Hirst said that Sigurd’s murder by Ivar will split the brothers. “They split up into different camps,” he told Variety. Floki has already left them surrendering himself to the gods. Bjorn, on the other hand, is on his Mediterranean mission. Now, the great army is left with Ivar, Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) and Ubbe. Going by Hirst’s statement, it seems that differences will crop up between Ivar, Hvitserk as well as Ubbe.

Lagertha might die

Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) who is now the Queen of Kattegat might die in the forthcoming season. Her death has already been predicted by the Seer (John Kavanagh). The Seer was right in predicting Ragnar’s death, and hence, it is expected that his words will be true for Lagertha as well.

The Seer said she would die in the hands of Ragnar’s sons. Ivar has been keen on killing her since the time he got to know about his mother Aslaug’s (Alyssa Sutherland) death. He wants to avenge the death of his mother, and hence, he might be the one killing her.

Bjorn and Ubbe will fulfill father's dream

Bjorn and Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) will be seen as the shadows of Ragnar in “Vikings” season 5. They will emerge as true warriors and fight battles just like their fathers.

“Bjorn and Ubbe will always believe what Ragnar believed: That the thing to do is to establish colonies in different lands [and] to find rich land for farming. They will not let that dream go,” Hirst told Rotten Tomatoes.

He also said that Ragnar will be their inspiration and wherever they will go, they will be called “the sons of Ragnar.”

Ragnar doesn’t disappear

Hist added that Ragnar will live in the show through Bjorn and Ubbe, who will fulfill his dreams. “Ragnar doesn’t disappear. Actually, in pretty much the same way that Athelstan (George Blagden) hasn’t disappeared from the show. His ghost, his presence — he’s still there. And so Ragnar doesn’t disappear,” he continued.

Hirst is writing last two episodes

Hirst also said that he is writing the last two episodes of season 5. “I’m pretty sure we can go on for another two seasons. I’m just writing the last two episodes of Season 5,” he told Variety. Hence, Hirst confirmed about “Vikings” season 6 as well.

“Vikings” season 5 air date has not been confirmed as of now. The show airs on History channel in the US. The show also airs in Australia on SBS One.
