The sixth season of “The Vampire Diaries” is soon nearing its end with only three episodes left on queue, firing up speculations on how the showrunners will tie the finale details with Nina Dobrev’s exit from the series. Previous reports claim that how her character Elena Gilbert will leave Mystic Falls will depend on a decision Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder, has to make.

Last Thursday’s episode showed how Caroline turned the tables on Damon and Elena when the pair tried to talk sense into the rampant vampire, with Caroline questioning Damon about not giving Elena the human life she has always wanted. The episode ended with Damon having to make a decision on whether or not he was taking the vampire cure with Elena.

Dobrev’s exit from the show in real life skyrockets the chances of her ending up as a human in the series as to enable a smooth departure from in the season finale, since the show’s main focus are the supernatural beings residing in Mystic Falls. The back-to-human antidote will then be a significant part of the season finale’s storyline and how the show will transition to the next season, Youth Health Mag reported.

In the teaser trailer for the 20th episode, Damon and Elena were already on the verge of taking the antidote together, having decided that they could not live without each other. However, complications arise when Stefan tried to convince his brother that being a human was the last thing he wanted to do and Bonnie raising a question that Elena could not yet answer: What if her human self is not in love with Damon at all?

Meanwhile, it is still unclear whether Damon will succumb to being human with Elena. While a human life with Elena sounds like a good finale for the sixth season, them leaving Mystic Falls while Damon struggles with humanity would also not make much sense. Moreover, rumors claim that if he proceeds with the plan, it would mean the end for Ian Somerhalder’s time on the CW series as well, IB Times reported. There has been no confirmation of Somerhalder’s exit from the vampire series, although Paul Wesley, who plays Damon’s brother Stefan Salvatore, has previously said that a new cast is underway for the seventh season, hinting that the TVD would no longer be focusing on the complicated lives of Elena and the Salvatore brothers.
