After Nina Dobrev announced she was officially exiting “The Vampire Diaries” by the end of the sixth season, frontrunners of the series have dished a few spoilers on how the season will conclude next month. Not only will the final episode show the last time Dobrev will be in the show, it will also supposedly give a glimpse into the other characters’ future.

While the cast and crew of the vampire series remain tightlipped on specific details regarding the season finale, Plec also gave an interesting spoiler that fans should look forward to. “The season ends with a flash forward,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “The show’s not cut yet, so by the time I’m done with it, it might not, but currently it does.”

What Plec failed to confirm was how much time would pass in the time jump and who will be in it, but sources say that it might show five years into the characters’ future. Fans are now more than ever intrigued on how Dobrev’s character Elena Gilbert will be making her departure from the series, wondering if she will get cured of her vampirism and find her human happily ever after with Matt Donovan, portrayed by Zach Roerig, away from the dangerous phenomena of Mystic Falls.

The writers of CW series had the benefit of knowing about Dobrev’s exit a bit earlier before her official announcement so that they could start working on Elena’s ending. “We were able to write what we believe will be the most satisfying goodbye for such a beloved character,” producer Caroline Dries said, as quoted by Unreality TV. She also revealed that it was pretty “emotional to brainstorm” while working on the season’s final episode, but added that the story “just sort of flowed naturally.”

In the meantime, Dobrev has cherished her last few days with the TVD family as she filmed her last episodes. According to Us Weekly, Dobrev’s costars and the TVD crew sent her and Michael Trevino, who plays Tyler Lockwood in the series and is also exiting the show, off with a special bash. Costar Michael Malarkey also revealed that Dobrev choked up a few times while reading her final lines.

Malarkey also said that the season will end with a “really great cliffhanger,” and he hoped that the TVD fans will be able to get past the fact that Elena will no longer be in the picture for the next season and still be interested with the story lines that will surface. He also said that the season finale, which is due to air on May 14, will be “definitely sad but definitely kind of bittersweet,” and that it was a “lovely way to say goodbye.”
