The year 2014 has been a spectacular period for gadget enthusiasts, owing to the fact that a slew of killer devices were released during this time. Notably, only few weeks back the Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2014 deals ended with customers buying their sought-after smartphones and tablets at discounted price. Christmas and New Year holidays are just around the corner and the holiday season sale will commence all over again.

Potential buyers looking to purchase killer flagship smartphones for the upcoming holidays should check out this ranking. It is worth noting that the rankings are established on an assortment of parameters like smartphone design, under the hood configurations, content selection, ease of availability and lastly, the deal-breaker category of price.

Business Insider has listed down the ranking for the smartphones based on the aforesaid criterion. Also it is worth noting that there could be several flagship devices that are not available in the U.S. at this point; hence, they are not covered in the ranking. Here is the list of the Top 10 smartphones in the world:

10. Google Nexus 5

At number 10, Google's Nexus 5 sits steadily even as the bigger and better Nexus 6 has recently been released. The main advantage of owning the Nexus 5 is the near-stock Android experience, unlike the forked/customised versions seen in Samsung, LG and HTC devices. As this is a Google product, there is a guarantee that the device will be up-to-date with the latest Android OS version. Notably, the Nexus 5 will set the buyers back by only $349 off contract.

9. Sony Xperia Z3

Not too long ago, Sony released its Xperia Z3 handset as a successor to Xperia Z2 released in the same year. Needless to say, it is one of the best Android devices across the globe, although the cost might put some buyers off. Notably, this handset is known for its crystal-clear display and the incredible camera unit housed in the handset. The added advantage is that the device is water-resistant. Nonetheless, the Sony Xperia Z3 is priced at $630.

8. Samsung Galaxy S5

The flagship device from Samsung, the Galaxy S5, is definitely a worthy replacement of the Galaxy S4 from 2013. As Business Insider points out, the device comes with an excellent display and sharp screen. Adding a cherry on top, Samsung did not pack the S5 with over-the-top features, in the name of providing every possible feature. Thereby, the device is impeccable. Speaking of price, the Galaxy S5 is dearer at $610.

7. Nexus 6

There is no surprise that Google's Motorola-made Nexus 6 with a massive 6-inch display would make it to the top 10 smartphones ranking. This device has everything an Android user would want and the advantage of Android v5.0 Lollipop OS straight out of the box cannot be overlooked. But then, it is the costliest Nexus smartphone and it will set the buyers back by a whopping $649.

6. OnePlus One

The underdog OnePlus One made it to the best smartphones list fair and square. A massive 5.5-inch phablet-like screen complemented by killer under the hood features and the much-loved Android-CyanogenMod combination make this device a clear winner. The best part, however, is that the OnePlus One can be purchased for only $300 without a contract. Therefore, it is cheaper than every other flagship smartphone released this year.

5. Moto X

The 2013 Moto X successor, the Moto X 2014, is an incredible device for buyers with interest in modest screen size of 5.2-inch display. Released only in September, the Moto X offers some of the best features combined with near-perfect stock Android experience. With the Moto Voice feature, the Moto X users can employ voice-based commands to make the handset work like a digital personal assistant. Furthermore, this handset is priced at $500.

4. HTC One (M8)

As Business Insider puts it, the HTC One (M8) is the best Android phone among the rest. It is worth noting that, there is also a Windows Phone based variant available for purchase. Starting with the beautiful design to the killer metallic build, HTC has combined both aesthetics and performance into one handset. Notably, the HTC One (M8) can be availed for $540.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The Galaxy Note 3 was a revelation in itself and to top it off, Samsung released its Galaxy Note 4 very recently and it is definitely a worthy-replacement to the 2013 device. The latest Samsung phablet is arguably the best phone Samsung has ever built. The 5.7-inch display, metallic frame covering the plastic body and the quality construction take the device to a whole new level. However, the price could be a turn off for many and it costs $750.

2. Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Apple's first phablet, the iPhone 6 Plus, is a clear winner among the Appleites. The 5.5-inch display is complemented by an ultra-thin chassis. Furthermore, this device carries the signature metallic look, which is synonymous to Apple handsets. On the flipside, the Apple iPhone 6 Plus will set the buyers back by $749.

1. Apple iPhone 6

The best smartphone in the world title goes to the Apple iPhone 6. But it is quite obvious that it is not easy to convince Android or Windows Phone users to agree to the choice. According to Business Insider, the 4.7-inch Apple iPhone 6 is a dream device for buyers that would like to have everything from a killer design, powerful software and hardware configurations to effective/useful app selection.

The most important point, however, is that Apple finally gave heed to what the customers want. In specific, by building large-screened iPhone models, Apple has come a long way from the pocket-friendly 4-inch+ iPhones. This particular strategy has resulted in an expansive market share for the company. Notably, Apple surged from 30.1 percent of smartphone market share to an impressive 41.5 percent in the August to October time-period, according to Kantar's analysis. Nonetheless, good things come at a price and therefore, this killer handset is priced at a whopping $649.
