EnRoute has published the list of top 10 new restaurants in Canada.

The annual list by the magazine for "10 Best New Restaurants in Canada" comes to its 12th year. This is the first time, however, when the magazine made a decision to publicise the names of the 35 shortlisted restaurants. The restaurants which were shortlisted for the Best New Restaurant category were all inaugurated between spring 2012 and June 2013. The panel of leaders in hospitality and food industry shortlisted the finalists and asked Canadians to vote for what they think the best. Canada voted. Bar Isabel from Toronto is now the best new restaurant in Canada, according to Canadians.

The list of winners consists of some of the most interesting names. One such name is Vij's Railway Express which is a mobile restaurant that got its inspiration from the rail carriages in India. The menu is enriched with regional flavours as well as Indian dishes. Vij's Railway Express won the People's Choice Award. Vikram Vij and his better half, Meeru Dhalwala, own the food truck from Vancouver. Vikram is a cookbook author as well.

Vancouver got its share of winners in the form of The Acorn and Pidgin as well. Pidgin got the 5th position in the list. The restaurant has suffered negative publicity recently when activists from Downtown Eastside criticised the upscale restaurant for opening a branch in a neighbourhood which is quite impoverished otherwise. Brandon Grossutti, the owner of Pidgin, told The Huffington Post that they were honoured to be included among the top new restaurants in Canada.

Andrew Braithwaite, the international writer of wine and food, was responsible for choosing the finalists. He ate out extensively for a month while maintaining anonymity. He mentioned that the diverse geographic nature was noteworthy. He also mentioned that even though Toronto had an upper hand among the list of winners in 2012, this year there are 5 provinces that make a strong impression. He found the trend interesting that people had started modifying regional dishes according to Canadian tastes.

Here are the winners:

1) Bar Isabel, Toronto

2) Shoto, Toronto

3) Fogo Island Inn, Joe Batt's Arm, Nfld. and Labrador

4) Supply and Demand, Ottawa

5) Pidgin, Vancouver
