The biggest winners of ARIA Awards 2015 are Perth band Tame Impala and Melbourne singer cum songwriter Courtney Barnett. At the annual music industry celebration, the two have shared six trophies. The event was celebrated in Sydney’s Star casino on Thursday.

Tame Impala's album “Currents” beat Barnett’s “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit” as well as albums by Vance Joy, Flight facilities and Hermitude. It grabbed the top slot and was declared “Album of the Year.” The band also took away the “Best Rock Album” and “Best Group” title.

Barnett was unable to attend the ceremony as she is touring Europe. The relative newcomer has enjoyed tremendous success in Australia as well as overseas for her debut album. She won the “Best Female Artist,” “Best Independent Release,” and “Breakthrough Artist” gongs.

Joy was named the “Best Male Artist” for his album “Dream Your Life Away” that has given him stupendous popularity and hit single “Riptide.” He is set to tour Australia with Taylor Swift from Saturday, reports The Australian.

Quote of the night, as per Australian Times, went to the Perth band when Kevin Parker, the multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, psychedelic rock musician and record producer commented whether his band beat AC /DC in something.

“Did we just beat AC/DC in something?,” Parker said.

Female pop star Kylie Minogue inducted the former “Young Talent Time” performer Tina Arena into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Arena was presented with her prize by cyclist Cadel Evans. She sang the national anthem in Paris when Evans won the “Tour de France” back in 2011.

Arena, along with Jessica Mauboy and the Veronicas, performed “Chains” on ARIA Awards night. She said that she was thrilled making records even after being in the business for 40 years.

“I want to still acknowledge that ladies over 40 are still in the game. Keep doing what you’re doing, ladies, because we will decide when it’s time for us to stop,” she said, naming Annie Lenox, Jennifer Lopez and Minogue.

The award ceremony wouldn’t have been complete without Ed Sheeran’s presence. He was undoubtedly the main overseas attraction at the event. Sheeran performed and received the award for Australian sales. He will begin his Australian tour on Saturday.

“Five Seconds of Summer, the Sydney pop band performed via satellite from Los Angeles. They were named “Best Australian Live Act.”

Other highlights included “Best Blues and Roots Album” by CW Stoneking for “Gon’ Boogaloo,” “Best Adult Contemporary Album” by Alex Gow for his band’s album “When We Talk About Love,” and “Best Country Album” by alternative country singer Shane Nicholson for “Hell Breaks Loose.” Conrad Sewell, the Brisbane singer based out of Los Angeles won “Song of the Year” for “Start Again.”
