Fans who were waiting to see some emotional father-daughter moments in “Star Wars: Episode 8” may be in for a disappointment. In a recent interview, director J.J. Abrams said that Rey’s parents were not featured in his movie.

[Spoiler alert]

Long before “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” came out, fans were speculating about Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) father being Han Solo (Harrison Ford). After the movie released, the speculation shifted to the possibility that perhaps Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) was her father.

Answering a question at a recent event, Abrams said Rey’s parents were not featured in his movie, so he couldn’t possible reveal who they are at the moment. The director also joked that Rey also constantly thinks about the identity of her parents, apart from the fans.

Rey’s back story is an important element of the new storyline in the fictitious galaxy. Flashback scenes of her being left behind in Jakku in Abrams’ movie suggests that more about this will be revealed in “Star Wars: Episode 8.” The flashback scene also teased a connection between Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), which was also not explored in the movie.

In the end, Rey realises that she is a Force sensitive and is successful in finding Luke. Hamill’s character did not have any dialogues in the movie, but his meeting with Rey seemed like an emotional reunion.

With Abrams now confirming that Rey’s parents were not there in his movie, fans can expect new important characters to be introduced in the next movie. However, after revealing this major clue about Rey, Abrams decided to back track his comments.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams said that he was only trying to say that Rey discover who her parents were in the movie and “ not that they may not already be in her world.” So, will Rey’s father turn out to be Luke, as some fans expect, or was Abrams doing some damage control after letting the cat out of the bag? Readers will have to wait and watch “Star Wars: Episode 8” to find out.
