Shakira’s charity baby shower proved to be a big success as it garnered a huge amount of donations for UNICEF. The Colombian singer is encouraging women across the world to host their own charity baby shower. UNICEF calls the effort of the celebrity couple "extraordinary."

The "Waka Waka" singer and her husband Gerard Piqué achieved amazing results with their charity baby shower. The charity act was even called the couple’s “biggest hit” and “most spectacular goal” to date. Shakira gave birth to their second child earlier this year but instead of throwing a traditionally lavish celebrity baby shower with friends and family, she and her husband decided to throw a baby shower that would benefit UNICEF and the organization’s beneficiaries ahead of the birth.

Hello magazine reports that the monetary results of the success just came in and proved how successful the event was. The singer and the football player’s fans really pulled through for their idols, raising over £101,000 (A$192,910) for the charity with their donations. On the couple's charity baby shower, fans and friends were encouraged to donate money and supplies to UNICEF instead and provide for the needs of the less privileged children worldwide. Their donations would be in lieu of the gifts they plan to give to the celebrity couple’s newborn, Sasha.

Shakira was overwhelmed with the support she received from the fans on this endeavour. "Gerard and I are so happy to know that so many kids will benefit from the generosity of all of those who have participated in the World Baby Shower Movement," said Shakira, who also serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2003. She also added what the donations would mean for the less fortunate children around the world.

"We've raised enough polio vaccines to be able to vaccinate 40,000 children and enough therapeutic food packets to feed another 15,000 – among other things that will now go to children in need,” she added. The singer also said that many moms have been inspired with what they did that they threw their own charity baby showers. She detailed that more than 500 mothers have already followed her and her husband's example.

While the achievement is a mean feat, Shakira hopes that it does not stop there. She said more could be and should be done for the children across the world. She said she hopes these charity showers continue on until all new mothers and newborns across the world could enjoy the same “vital life-saving tools” that would ensure safe and healthy childhood years.

UNICEF itself released a statement lauding the couple for their achievement and support. According to the organization, the money gained through the charity can reach "tens of thousands of children with life-changing supplies."
