Samsung has been ahead of the competition with its Galaxy devices when it comes to display resolution. Now, reports say that the South Korean company is said to be upping up the ante by working on a new smartphone patent that could exceed today’s Quad HD technology.

The new technology Samsung is working on, dubbed “11k” display, will boast of an amazing 2,250 pixels-per-inch. Samsung’s latest model’s sport only a 4K display.

Samsung Display, along with the help of 13 other companies, began producing the 11K smartphone panels, on June 1, as reported by Korean news outlet ETNews. The group working with Samsung Display is expected to invest $26.5 million in the technology over the next five years.

The Galaxy S6, has a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED screen and it offers 577 pixels-per-inch. The screen was so sharp that the naked eye cannot see its individual pixels, no matter how close you look at it. The 11K display in the works is said to offer four times, maybe even more, as many pixels per inch.

It is expected that Samsung won’t release any 11K displays in any of its smartphones in the near future. One issue that remains to be solved for 11K display technology on smartphones is that it would consume high amounts of battery juice and processing resources. The report also said that pushing the displays to the extreme would allow 3d effects on the device.

The 11K display tech is likely to be introduced at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, as Samsung is planning on using it on larger screens. Currently, the company has released TV’s with 8K Display.
