The Toronto Raptors and one of their top players, DeMar Derozan will not discuss a contract extension during the 2015-2016 NBA season, according to the team’s general manager, Masai Ujiri.

“There will be no extension talks with DeMar before the end of the 2015-16 season. He can only extend for a certain amount of money and I just foresee that DeMar sees himself- and we see him- as more than that type of a player,” Ujiri told sportsnet.ca. “So I think DeMar is going to wait to see how it goes this year and do the best deal for himself, and we’ll do the best deal for ourselves, too.”

Derozan, who was the Raptors’ first round pick in the 2009 NBA Draft or the 9th overall selection, is coming off an injury-ridden season playing in just 60 games for the Raptors. He averaged 20.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the 2014-2015 regular season.

Derozan signed a four-year $38 million (AU$ 54.55 million) deal with the Raptors in 2013 but has a player option for the 2016-2017 season, which means he can choose to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming NBA season.

The Raptors are coming off a season when they went 49-33 in the regular season but got swept in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs despite holding homecourt advantage against the Washington Wizards. Derozan averaged 20.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists in the series loss.
