Gearing up for “Penny Dreadful” Season 2, Hollywood hunk Josh Hartnett talked about his Victorian-era role as Ethan Chandler on Showtime’s British-American horror TV series. Best known for his high-profile roles on movies like “Pearl Harbor,” “Black Hawk Down” and “Hollywood Homicide,” “Penny Dreadful” is the actor’s first TV stint after taking a break from the limelight.

Set in Victorian London circa 1891, the show features a wide array of fictional and tormented characters like Dorian Gray, the Ripper and Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his monster. Currently playing a haunted character who shape-shifts, the actor opens up about the show’s sophomore season and what fans can expect from Ethan Chandler.

“I’ve thought of Ethan as a person with the same number and types of senses as I have, so his transformation into a werewolf is only a kind of fugue state,” Hartnett told Playboy. “My thoughts on how he feels about sexuality, love and loss are more about him as a person than as a shape-shifter or an “other” kind of being.”

Haunted by his secrets, Ethan is set to open up for the upcoming season as there will be more “sexual nuance” and levity for the rest of the ensemble cast. The American star also revealed that Season 2 will bring more hope for Ethan as he tries to embrace the other side of him.

When asked what surprised him most about the series, the 36-year-old actor admitted that series creator John Logan is very cool of allowing the actor to contribute about where the show is going. Currently working on the show’s Season 3, Logan is known for his notable works on films like “The Time Machine,” “The Last Samurai” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Meanwhile, “Penny Dreadful” Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on May 3 and not on April 26, at it welcomes back recurring star Helen McCrory as Madam Kali. Also known as Evelyn Pool from the previous season, McCrory is set to play Season 2’s antagonist as the tension will rise between her and Vanessa Ives.

Other stars who are set to reprise their roles include Eva Green as Vanessa Ives, Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray, Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm Murray, Billie Piper as Bona Croft, Rory Kinnear as Caliban and Harry Treadaway as Victor Frankenstein.
