Lorde Explains ‘MOM’ Comment on Kim Kardashian’s Naked Bum Photo, Says It’s a Compliment

Lorde actually thinks Kim Kardashian looks awesome in her nude bum photo. The Kiwi superstar cleared speculations that she was insulting the wife of her idol Kanye West when she tweeted “Mom.”

When Kardashian released the image of her oiled naked backside for Paper magazine earlier this week, some celebrities reacted negatively to her very naked display. “Glee” actress Naya Rivera was one of Kardashian’s critics, claiming Kardashian is already a mother, and therefore the photo is humiliating.

Lorde also sent a cryptic message on her Twitter, calling the reality show star a “Mom.” And as she gave no other explanation or even a follow-up of her tweet, some of her followers thought she was lambasting Kardashian as well. Perhaps she agreed with Rivera that Kardashian is shameless for posing naked when she’s already a mother to daughter North West.

However, that’s not what Ella Yelich-O’Connor, Lorde’s real name, meant. On the contrary, she was complimenting Mrs West for the sexy photo.

When a fan wrote to her to express her disappointment over Lorde’s apparent diss on Kardashian, she explained what “Mom” really means. The fan called her a “hypocrite” for calling herself a feminist but body-shaming Kardashian. She wrote a thorough explanation on her Tumblr:

“omg haha ok so. time to explain this. i retweeted kim’s amazing cover and wrote ‘MOM,’ which among the youthz is a compliment; it basically jokingly means ‘adopt me/be my second mom/i think of you as a mother figure you are so epic’ (obviously i love my own mama and she is the best tho) but straight after that i think someone else called out the cover saying kim has no right to look that sexy as she is a mother which is TOTAL trash – why would that stop her? If anything i think she gets even more beautiful and sexy all the time like a fineass wine, and of course has every right to showcase that – but i think our two comments got lumped in and also maybe reporters don’t understand my breed of humour/worship. i am the biggest fan of jean-paul goude and of grace jones, as you know, and there’s no way i could support one and not the other you know? it wouldn’t make any sense to worship rih in her Swarovski crystal gown at the CFDAs, or grace naked on the cover of island life (as shot by goude!), and not kim. To summarize – kim’s cover was pure heaven. so so beautiful. i’m proud to say it’ll be on my wall.” (sic)

“Rih” is Rihanna, who went to the CFDA Fashion Awards in June in a revealing Swarovski crystal gown designed by Adam Selman.

Lorde added that she already messaged their mutual friend, presumably Kanye, to explain to Kardashian that she wasn’t insulting her. Kardashian understood Lorde’s real meaning, and so “all is well.”

“so i hope that’s cleared up. next time i’ll go for a good old fashioned ‘SLAY’ instead,” the Grammy-winning 18-year-old concluded.
