There’s a reason why Lorde was able to write a beautifully haunting song about Katniss Everdeen. The Kiwi songstress feels a special connection with the heroine of “The Hunger Games” series, which is perhaps also why she and Jennifer Lawrence hit it off immediately.

Even before she turned 18 this month, she already has countless nominations and awards, including two Grammy Award wins. A few months earlier, she was also given the role of a curator for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” soundtrack, a role which she has clearly taken seriously. She wrote a song for the album as well, “Yellow Flicker Beat,” the music video of which hit online on her 18th birthday.

According to her, the song was her “attempt at getting inside [Katniss’] head.” It’s a big responsibility to not only write a song for the album, but to curate the whole soundtrack. It’s a job meant for her, though, as she feels a special connection with the heroine of Suzanne Collins’ novel series.

“I’ve never really felt that inspired by somebody who’s from a young adult novel, but [Katniss] has this kind of raw, embodied confidence and the way she makes decisions is very impulsive and just driven by this very clear moral compass she has, so that’s pretty appealing to me as someone who makes decisions in a similar way,” Lorde told Sydney Morning Herald.

Explaining the songs she selected for the soundtrack, which includes tracks from Grace Jones, Bat for Lashes, Charli XCX, Ariana Grande, Q-Tip, Stromae, Haim, Tove Lo and The Chemical Brothers, Lorde said, “The soundtrack had to be something that reflected what was going on in these characters’ minds.”

It appears that Lorde’s special connection isn’t just with the fictional Katniss, but with the actress who plays the strong heroine as well. During the London premiere of the film, Lorde and Lawrence were seen laughing together like old friends. Lawrence also recalled her first meeting with Lorde, saying she was star-struck with the slightly younger star when Lorde visited the movie set.

And if Katniss were a real person today, she would be a Lorde fan like Lawrence is.

“I think she really captured that character so magically that it was a really amazing thing to listen to, so I think Katniss would be a huge Lorde fan. And obviously Taylor Swift,” Lawrence, 24, told Bang Showbiz.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” will be released in theatres in Australia on November 20.
