The LG G5 will be launched on Feb. 21, just a day before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 kicks off, LG Mobile USA has confirmed on Twitter.

This means the LG G5 could be one of the most power packed flagship smartphone launches this year, especially since it is bringing significant feature upgrades to the current LG G4. It will bring a fresh new design, powerful processor, better camera, bigger battery and a fresh biometric recognition technology.

Samsung will also launch its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S7, at the Samsung Unpacked 2016 event on the same day.

Design and display

LG is expected to launch the G5 with an all-metal unibody design which its predecessor lacks. The upcoming flagship will sport a flexible touchscreen and tout a sleeker look with its True HD IPS display.

The upcoming LG G5 may also get a bump in screen size. The smartphone may arrive with a 5.6-inch display as compared to the 5.5-inch QHD display of LG G4, reports Trusted Reviews.

Another new design alteration is a new accessory slot at the bottom. Again, LG is believed to be repositioning the volume button to the left side of the handset. The handset also seems to feature a USB Type-C port at the bottom.

Camera and Iris scanner

There are speculations that the upcoming smartphone will feature a 20-megapixel rear camera 4K video recording with a custom 1/2-inch sensor from Sony, as compared to LG G4’s 16 MP IMX234 sensor. The camera unit will also feature optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus, as reported by GforGames.

A report by Trusted Reviews mentioned that the smartphone may also sport an 8MP front-facing camera accompanied by a second selfie-lens, just like the LG V10.

Moreover, the main camera of the G5 is believed to feature an Iris Eye Recognition scanner for enhanced security of the handset. This means users will be able to unlock the phone with just eye contact.

The LG G5 could be the most secure smartphone ever. Rumours indicate that IRIENCE, a South Korea-based biometric specialist, is developing the unique scanning technology for LG.

LG G Pay

The high-end flagship may be equipped with LG G Pay, its own digital mobile payment platform. The much appreciated LG G4 does not come with such a support for mobile payments.

Processor

The LG G5 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 processor with an upgraded X12 LTE modem. Meanwhile, the LG G4 which was initially pegged to feature Snapdragon 810 SoC, has finally launched with Snapdragon 808 chipset on board.

The Snapdragon 820 chipset will come with support for up to 600 Mbps (Cat 12) of download speeds and allow up to 150 Mbps (Cat 13) of uploads. However, LG is yet to confirm the speculated features.
