In order to download Kindle ebooks and use its services, owners should immediately update the eBook reader by March 22, 2016.

According to Amazon, a software update is mandatory for all the Kindle owners using pre-2013 Kindle eBooks.

“Customers using an outdated software version on Kindle e-readers require an important software update by March 22, 2016 in order to continue to download Kindle books from the Cloud, access the Kindle Store, and use other Kindle services on their device,” reads the update.

This means the software update is required for the original Kindle Paperwhite (2012) and all the versions before it.

Here is the entire list of affected Kindle devices:

  • Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
  • Kindle 2nd Generation (2009)
  • Kindle DX 2nd Generation (2009)
  • Kindle Keyboard 3rd Generation (2010)
  • Kindle 4th Generation (2011)
  • Kindle 5th Generation (2012)
  • Kindle Touch 4th Generation (2011)
  • Kindle Paperwhite 5th Generation (2012)

Update via Wi-Fi

To download and install the update, users must ensure their devices are connected via Wi-Fi. During the update process the device may restart several times. “While asleep, the software update will download and install automatically,” confirmed Amazon.

Update via Wireless

Owners need to ensure their devices including Kindle (1st Generation), Kindle (2nd Generation) or Kindle DX (2nd Generation) are connected wirelessly overnight. The software update will get installed automatically.
