He stated that though he is all muscles and weighs 230 pounds now, he was very skinny and nerd-like as a teenager. In school he could not do a single pull up during a high school fitness test and so he decided to work out and build his body, the Examiner reported.

Because of his tow-carb, Paleo style diet, he said his menu is broken down into five segments. His first meal is at 7 in the morning: Granola with Fage plain Greek yogurt and a glass of water with Gold Standard whey protein. His second meal is a small protein drink at 9 a.m. Manganiello has a second round of breakfast at an hour later. His second breakfast includes egg-white omelet with ham, peppers and feta cheese, a small cup of fruit and black coffee with Splenda.

He stated that at 2:15 p.m. he has two oven-roasted chicken breasts with corn and green beans, and six baked buffalo chicken wings with hot sauce for lunch. His last meal of the day includes is at 6:30 in the evening. An Italian-style salmon with leafy green vegetables and a cup of coffee, makes up his diner.

According to the Examiner, Manganiello said that though everyone works out, the secret to a great physique is not just that. It involves not just a physical but a mental process as well, he said. He told Entertainment Weekly that he had overcome alcoholism and homelessness and it was failure that became the driving force to success.

For the "True Blood" star's CrossFit-style workout, he has a trainer, Ron Mathews, a CrossFit trainer who had competed in the Masters 40-44 Division of the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games. Manganiello works out six days a week. "When I'm training for 'True Blood,' I don't eat any sugar except for some fruit here and there. So it's no sugar, no bread, no real carbs all day," he said.

Manganiello's works out twice a day. In the morning workout, he does Olympic-style weight-lifting, lunges, box jumps, and overhead push-presses. Later he does a second set of work out that is a half-hour sprint-interval run on the treadmill.
