Huawei quashed on Friday rumours that it would roll out the Ascend Mate Phablet or Ascend P2. Instead, it announced the launch of the Ascent G510, priced at £130.

The new model, initially but quietly introduced at the MWC 2013 in Barcelona, will be on the shelves of Vodafone UK initially beginning Friday, April 12. Buyers have the option of purchasing it at £130 pay as you go or on a contract for £13 a month.

The Made-in-China smartphone features 4.5-inch screen display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of internal storage, microSD slot, 5MP camera, 1,750mAh battery, NFC and it runs on Android Jelly Bean, version 4.1. Its UI is Huawei's Emotion.

TechRadar, which tried the new Huawei device at the MWC, described the handset as a decent entry-level phone, but warned its user interface may not be the usual one that smartphone users are familiar with.

CNET said it is a steal at its retail price since the phone's resolution at 854x480 pixels clocks in at 218ppi, higher than Samsung's Galaxy Mega which offers only 190ppi. The South Korea-made units also debuts Friday in Europe.

The G510 has an on-board facial recognition technology that allows users to unlock the unit with their face.

"For years, 'entry-level' smart phone have meant compromise - phones not powerful enough, with screens not big enough, to be able to truly deliver on the promise of mobile Internet ... The Ascent G510 is the latest in a line of Huawei smart phones to challenge that," Huawei UK's Director of Product Management James Powell said in a statement.

The same model is scheduled for release in the U.S. by summer, although earlier speculations by techies named the possible Huawei device as the Huawei Ascent Mate with a 6.1-inch screen or the Ascent D2 and P2.
