Spoiler alert! This article contains “Grey’s Anatomy” spoilers. Read on if you would like to know what happens next before the next episode airs.

“Grey’s Anatomy” viewers have long hoped to see a romance blossom between long time friends Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). Sources reveal that this popular desire has been heard by the people behind the camera and series creator Shonda Rhimes herself provides what could be the door opener.

Rhimes revealed as to why she did not make the characters consider being more than friends in the show. She told TV Line that it would be like asking her why she did not have a certain kind of cheese; the answer being that because she did not have that kind of cheese. This response, however, had fans insisting that they see the pair together soon.

Rhimes also added some hints about Nathan Riggs’ (Martin Henderson) future with Meredith. She said that the head of general surgery at Grey Sloan has always been interesting and complex. When asked whether or not a wedding between the two could be expected soon, she responded that weddings do nothing in defining her characters.

This outrage sparked when the show aired its midseason finale in November 17. In that episode, Meredith exerted effort to push Alex not to go with the plea bargain that would land him behind bars for two years. This emotional midseason finale led to a barrage of tweets from fans from all over the world; most of which hope that the two characters might find one another somewhere in the near future.

Grey’s Anatomy” will be back on screens on ABC on January 19, 2017 at 8 p.m. In Australia, it will air on Channel Seven.
