Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid are one of Hollywood’s hottest young couples, and the 23-year-old musician has reportedly gone down on one knee to make things official. However, the 21-year-old model gently let him down.

Gigi turned down the proposal because she believes they are both too young to get married. “She’s only 21 and doesn’t feel ready to tie the knot,” a source told Life & Style Magazine (via News.com.au). "So she turned him down.” To add to that, the source pointed out that Gigi has seen her share of divorces and does not want to go down that road.

“She’s seen her mum go through two messy divorces, so Gigi wants to make 100 percent sure Zayn’s the one before she makes a lifetime commitment,” the source said. Gigi’s mom, Yolanda Hadid, recently split from her music producer husband, David Foster. She also divorced from the model’s father, Mohamed Hadid, in 2000.

And while the two are arguably too young to get married, each of them has shown maturity in how they handled the situation. Yahoo! has reported that the two are still together at this point, despite Gigi’s answer.

Before Zayn dated Gigi, he was engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards for two years. When Perrie confirmed how Zayn broke off their relationship, it sent the media and their fans into a frenzy. “It was horrible, the worst time in my life,” she wrote in the 2016 Little Mix autobiography entitled “Our World.” “A four-year relationship, two year engagement ended by a simple text message. Just like that.”
