George Clooney admitted that he didn’t go the traditional way of celebrating his first wedding anniversary with wife Amal. There was no fancy celebration and no gift giving involved and the actor recently revealed why he preferred to have it low-key.

Extra’s A.J. Calloway caught up with Clooney Tuesday, at the New York Film Festival for the 15th anniversary screening of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” It was there that the actor opened up about how he and wife Amal celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

The actor revealed that they had their anniversary date two nights ago. But their celebration reportedly started with Clooney attending a memorial event for the deceased Jerry Weintraub before he and Amal could go out for dinner.

Seemingly disappointed by the lack of romantic effort, Calloway joked, “That was it, just a little dinner?” Clooney explained that he didn’t want to go overboard with the celebration since it’s still the first wedding anniversary.

“Well, you know, what are you gonna do, shoot off fireworks?” the actor joked then told Calloway, “You know, sometimes you just go to dinner… This is the paper anniversary you don't want to go too crazy on the first, you've got a lot more to do.”

The couple reportedly went on a sushi date at the actor’s favourite Asanebo restaurant in Studio City. Mirror UK claimed Clooney also seemed to have forgotten to give Amal an anniversary gift or he might have just failed to mention it to Calloway.

However, an insider told US Weekly that the couple spent their anniversary over an intimate dinner at Sunset Tower Hotel’s Bar in West Hollywood. Clooney and Amal reportedly arrived at the venue on Sunday at 10 p.m. The source said it was just the two of them having a quiet and lovely romantic meal.

Another eyewitness told the publication that Amal and Clooney were dressed for the occasion, with Amal wearing fancy jewellery. They reportedly celebrated their first wedding anniversary over champagne.

Clooney and Amal got married in Venice, Italy on Sept. 27, 2014. They both said "I do" at the Ca' Farsetti Palace, in front of invited guests, including the actor’s best pal Rande Gerber and his wife Cindy Crawford.
