American fitness guru Richard Simmons, who has been missing in action for the last three years, has finally made a statement. The 68-year-old, who was hospitalised on Monday for stomach problems, spoke directly to his fans.

“Hello to everyone who has shown concern for me and sent their good wishes,” the fitness guru said in a statement posted on his social media accounts on Wednesday. “You will never know how much it means to me. Aren’t you sick of hearing and reading about me?! LOL Well by now you know that I’m not ‘missing,’ just a little under the weather. I’m sure I will be feeling good and back home in a couple of days.”

Simmons' health has been the topic of concern for the last three years, particularly because he hasn't been spotted in public at all and had reportedly confined himself to his California estate. His recent hospitalisation was the first time the former fitness guru was seen in public.

Simmons' disappearance from the public eye since 2014 had inspired a podcast in February titled “Missing Richard Simmons." It was made by Dan Taberski, former producer for “The Daily Show” and a friend of Simmons. The six-episode podcast became the most downloaded on iTunes but faced criticism from a few sections of society for invading Simmons' privacy.

In the public statement, Simmons talked about seeking help when needed. He told fans that no one should be afraid of seeking help when they require it. It is not always possible for people to solve problems themselves as “sometimes it’s [the problems] just bigger than we are.” He further acknowledged how he reached out for help and hoped that his fans will also do the same if they need to.

“I’m sure there are people in your life who love and care for you and would do anything to help you with the challenges you face. Just knowing you care has already made me feel better. Hope to see you again soon!” he concluded.

Though Simmons had been missing in action from the public eye, he has been posting updates on social media. One of his updates suggested that he has signed a deal with Brand + Talent, a management company co-founded by Michael Catalano, Simmons’s manager for thirty years. The company has acquired exclusive rights to represent Simmons for merchandising, endorsements and licensing opportunities.
