Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” featuring Chris Puth was one of the most successful songs in 2015. Unbeknownst to fans, the “Furious 7” song was originally offered to Eminem and his protégé 50 Cent, the latter recently claimed.

On Jan. 10, Sunday, 50 Cent joined former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton on their sports show on WFAN New York. Aside from talking about New York sports, Eminem’s protégé also explained why they turned down the single, which was eventually picked up by Khalifa and Puth.

According to 50 Cent, Eminem turned down the opportunity to record the “Furious 7” song, which was a tribute to the late Paul Walker, because he wanted to focus on producing the “Southpaw” soundtrack. Along with 50 Cent, the boxing film starred Jake Gyllenhaal opposite Rachel McAdams.

Both Eminem and 50 Cent contributed to the “Southpaw” soundtrack, which was released on Shady Records.

“At the time we had to make a decision,” XXL Mag quoted 50 Cent as saying. The rapper, who is set to reprise his role as Kanan in “Power” Season 3, explained that Eminem decided to do “Southpaw” because “he was invested in the project.” Among the songs in the soundtrack are “Phenomenal” by Eminem, “Kings Never Die” by Eminem featuring Gwen Stefani and “Drama Never Ends” by 50 Cent.

On the other hand, “See You Again” went on to launch Puth’s music career. He recently made headlines with his “Marvin Gaye” collaborator Meghan Trainor when they locked lips after their performance at the American Music Awards 2015.

“There are 19 performers there,” Puth explained the situation in an interview with Billboard. “What were we going to do to stand out?”

Released on March 17, 2015, “See You Again” was produced by Puth, DJ Frank E and Andrew Cedar. The three co-wrote the song with Khalifa in memory of Walker, who was killed in a car accident in California on Nov. 20, 2013.
