Singer-songwriter Charlie Puth explained that he and fellow artist Meghan Trainor planned their makeout scene at the American Music Awards (AMAs).

In a car interview with “JohnJay & Rich Show,” Puth admitted that he has no romantic feelings for Trainor. The singer said he felt nervous at the time on how to make the scene look real because he was “not attracted to her in that way.”

“I’m a very aggressive maker-outer. But Meghan is my friend, and I don’t know, like, my natural boy instincts kinda just like kicked in,” he said. The “Marvin Gaye” singer continued, “She’s my friend. It was mostly lip action, but I didn’t want to get too crazy.”

On Twitter, Puth insisted that he and Trainor are not into each other. He gave the same statement in an interview during the AMAs.

“Before it begins...we are just friends. so happy to preform with Meghan tonight!! thank you for all the love everybody,” he wrote.

Trainor supported Puth’s statement via Instagram to clear that they aren’t dating.

“All about dat ass grab doe @charlieputh proud of you Charlie _ #imsingle,” she captioned the snap of her and Puth kissing at the AMAs.

That said, Puth revealed that he has been seeing someone special but definitely not his pal Trainor. The 23-year-old singer told USA Today in an interview on Tuesday that he was also shocked about what he did on national television.

“At first, we [Meghan and I] were like, ‘Holy s---, what did we just do?’ I have a girl kind of in my life right now that I’m not making too public and I don’t want people to get the wrong idea,” he said.

Puth credited fellow singer Trainor for the success of his first record, “Marvin Gaye,” saying he wouldn’t be anywhere without her “initial push.”

“Marvin Gaye” is part of Puth’s debut album “Nine Track Mind” due to release on Jan. 29 under Atlantic Records. Its music video, featuring Puth and Trainor, was uploaded on YouTube in April and it has already garnered more than 147 million views as of Nov. 26.
