It’s been almost 4 years since Square Enix and Eidos successfully revived the “Deus Ex franchise with “Deus Ex: Human Revolution.” While most studios might have followed the game with a rapid-fire sequel, Square took its time. A new trailer announcing “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided” indicates the wait may just have been worth it.

The three-and-a-half-minute trailer for “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided” is hosted on the official “Deus Ex” YouTube channel and states that the new game picks up two years after the events which concluded “Human Revolution.” Set to an epic soundtrack, the gorgeously rendered trailer shows the aftermath of the Aug Incident, when millions of innocent augmented citizens died as they were stripped of control of their minds and bodies and forced to attack anyone nearby.

The year 2029 sees mechanically augmented segregated from society and treated as outcasts and labelled terrorists. Details from the latest Game Informer magazine, collected by NeoGAF user, Shinobi602, indicate that “Human Revolution” protagonist Adam Jensen returns. Jensen is a member of a covert, government-sponsored task force named Task Force 29, which is a new branch of Interpol that has been created to combat the growing threat of a new breed of terrorism.

“Mankind Divided” will offer Jensen the ability to call upon twice as many augmentations as “Human Revolution” did. Players can assign their favourite augments to the controller’s d-pad for easy selection. Each active augment consumes a specific amount of energy, which is regained when Jensen deactivates it. Examples of some of the new augments are “Tesla,” which allows Jensen to fire darts into enemies to tag them and stealthily take them out, or “C.A.S.I.E,” which lets Jensen analyse the psychological state of individuals and respond appropriately during conversation.

Eidos Montreal have taken on board a lot of the feedback received after the release of “Human Revolution” and worked hard to ensure “Mankind Divided” fixes a lot of those shortcomings. Boss fights can now be approached as the player intends, either via stealth or full-on combat. The gunplay has been drastically overhauled and is now a more viable option, offering Jensen the ability to adjust his weapons mid-combat to change ammo type, firing pattern, weapon attachments and more. AllGamesBeta has a smattering of beautiful screenshots that show off different locations, combat and Jensen’s ability to modify his weapons during battle.

No release date has been announced, but fans will be pleased to hear that “Mankind Divided” is exclusive to the next-gen platforms and PC, taking advantage of all the technological improvements those platforms offer. “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” was met with critical and gamer acclaim upon its release in 2011, with GamesRadar awarding it a 5/5 in its review, highlighting the game’s well crafted universe, story and open-ended gameplay.
