Chicago Bulls All-Star guard Derrick Rose is targeting to make his return in summer, when Team USA plunges to action against the best international teams in the world at the 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Rose, who is currently rehabilitating his surgically repaired knee after tearing his MCL in November, expressed his optimism about joining Team USA as they defend the title against elite teams such as Argentina, France and host country Spain.

The former NBA MVP has been iffy in committing for Team USA after suffering another setback early in the season. However, after a successful surgery and months of intense rehabilitation, D-Rose is apparently ready to go.

"I'm looking forward to getting back on the court this summer and having the chance to represent our country," Rose said in an interview with Chicago Tribune. "It's an honor to play for Team USA and Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski)."

The Chicago Bulls coaching staff and management have also expressed his support for Rose, who used his strong performance in the last edition of the World Championship as a launching pad to claim his first ever regular-season MVP award.

"Our thinking is that it would be a terrific opportunity for him," Bulls General Manager Gar Forman in an interview with Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago. "And we would be supportive of him playing."

Team USA and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewsk also welcomed the opportunity to have Rose suiting up again for the World Championship, though the legendary head coach stressed he's going to be extra cautious about the Bulls' star's health.

"We'd never try to put him in harm's way for his career, Krsyzewski said via SB Nation. But if he's ready, we'd welcome Derrick. Derrick's one of the great guys, in addition to being an outstanding player. He's a great team guy. And that's why we want him part of USA Basketball."

Postseason Return?

Few weeks ago, Mitch Lawrence of New York Daily News provided a hint that the Bulls were expecting Rose to play in the postseason where the Bulls are tabbed as one of the possible contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Bulls General Manager Gar Forman immediately shut down the rumours, pointing out that Rose will never play a single ballgame this season. However, several sources indicated that the Bulls star is already nearing tip-top shape, and even working out with the team's second unit during scrimmages. It would be a good news if Rose will make his return in the postseason because his presence will give the Bulls additional firepower in the backcourt alongside an improving D.J. Augustin, and at the same time, provide the team a leader on the floor.

Then again, the ball is not on his court. Forman has the final say, unfortunately.
