Dell launched a comprehensive set of desktop virtualisation solutions on Thursday, including a new VDI appliance, a new management software, the latest Wyse ThinOS and a new mobile thin client called the Latitude 3480. The all-new laptop promises secure and controlled management convenience thanks to its portable form factor.

The Dell Latitude 3480 mobile thin client is optimised for task and knowledge workforces. The notebook leverages Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and boasts of its wide-ranging connectivity options in its enterprise-grade design and hardware.

The Dell laptop sports a 14-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. For power, it packs an Intel dual core processor with integrated graphics, up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a long-lasting battery. For peripheral handiness, a broad set of routes are available, including USB 3.1, USB 3.0, RJ45, HDMI and VGA.

The Latitude 3480 also provides software flexibility as it can connect to virtual desktop brokers like VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Microsoft RDS among others. It’s backed by a number of security certifications, including a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip for hardware-based authentication and tamper detection.

Meanwhile, the latest Wyse ThinOS 8.4 has VMware Blast Extreme remote connection protocol support for improved graphical experience and manageability. The new operating system now also supports the latest Citrix HDX RealTime Optimisation Pack 2.2, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and HTTP Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) multimedia redirection. What’s more, it includes a host of security enhancements like firmware signature verification.

The Wyse Management Suite, which was released a month ago, permits easy optimisation of thin client deployments with a multitude of seats and takes less than five minutes to install. It’s available in two versions: Standard and Pro. The former is free and can manage up to 10,000 endpoints, while the latter is a yearly and pay-per-seat subscription.

For those interested, the Dell Latitude 3480 mobile thin client will be available beginning July 19. The new laptop starts at US$799 (AU$1,059). Both Wyse ThinOS 8.4 and Wyse Management Suite are now available, but the migration capability from Wyse Device Manager to Wyse Management Suite will be available in the subsequent release.
