Approximately 182 passengers were found suffering the effects of a gastro bug after the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Explorer of the Seas docked in Sydney on Wednesday morning.

The said condition was confirmed by health authorities as gastroenteritis. The virus outbreak started on Dec. 4.

The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District was notified of the incident before the ship docked.

Passengers affected by the outbreak expected a 14-day cruise but instead had to deal with their ill state and wild weather conditions.

Paramedics were already on standby when the cruise ship arrived at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at The Rocks in Sydney. Explorer of the Seas docked at 5 a.m.

The ship was bound to take in more passengers this afternoon during their dock at Sydney Harbour. None of the passengers were said to be too sick to be hospitalised.

According to the Royal Caribbean, the affected passengers responded well to over-the counter medication.

"At Royal Caribbean International we have high health standards for all our guests and crew," the cruise ship said in a statement. "All new guests embarking will receive a letter at boarding that asks them to advise if they have experienced any gastrointestinal symptoms within the last three days," they added.

“Every time you walked in and out of the corridors there'd be all the medics going in and out of all of the rooms," one guest told 9News.

"Just about everybody was sick," the guest added.

Some passenger also isolated themselves upon experiencing the virus first hand. However, when they found medics in the vicinity, they began to feel better.

"We went to the medical and once they gave us the injection and tablets we were fine and enjoyed the rest of the cruise," one of the passengers said.

The cruise liner was appreciated for how they managed the circumstances.

“Apart from the brilliant work from staff continually sanitising the handrails, doors, eating areas [and] and the announcements reminding people to wash hands, we would not have even known about it," one of the passenger commented.

The ship also experienced extreme weather conditions. The passengers were told that the vessel had tilted at 10 or 11 degrees during their cruise.
