Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 10 Recap: Pains of the Past, the Crimes of the Future
You know you have something good going on when something makes you ask the fundamental questions in life. And in Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 10, it's about why bad things happen to good people.
**Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 9 recap: When you start diggin for skeletons in the closet of the BAU team, you may find some interesting things.
Everything starts off surprisingly peaceful--it's nighttime and a creepy call wakes up a woman in the middle of the night, taunting her in a boyish voice. Afterwards, she and her husband go back to bed and wake up to have breakfast. It's a pretty standard all-American scene: a family of three and a dog, which the husband takes outside while the wife calls the son down for breakfast.
Once you see the blood splashed on the front door and the fact that the son is not responding to the mother after five calls, you know the crime scene's been set without disturbing gore or actual killing on-screen.

Sad case of the past haunting you
For the most part, Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 10 is one of those rare episodes without any real happy endings. Most of the time, the BAU team are able to apprehend the killer just in the nick of time--something viewers are already used to.
But this time, within 20 minutes of the show, you're treated to the fact that the only victim for this case is dead.
That doesn't mean that they were unable to catch the killer, who coincidentally also has a sad past, which was basically the root of all the evil that drove him to commit murder.

Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 10 is pretty much a case of the unsub with a very bad past--and the way the BAU team was able to figure this out is also very nostalgic to long-time fans, as this is not deus ex machina and artfully done.
Imagine a father mail-ordering a foreign bride just to torture her in front of their son. Not only that, the father has also instructed the unsub as a kid to film all of those horrendous acts, perpetually scarring him before he even has a chance to comprehend any good in humanity.
Because of this, he was driven to kill the kids of families that reminded him of his own (an American father, a foreign mother, and a lone son), regardless of them being a "good" or "bad" family. The BAU team spent a good deal on Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 10 in trying to find the connection between the unsub and the family's own situation, which was actually refreshing.
The ending was more solemn, choosing to focus on the couple, and showing hints of how their lives would never be the same again. The realization dawned that despite being good people, something like that could still happen to them.

More similar episode to come?
Criminal Minds Season 9 Episode 10 isn't the first time that this style of narrative was employed, but it's an effective way to keep things fresh while still giving fans the feelings that the earlier seasons of the show held.
This would be a great buildup, as there are only three episodes before the explosive and much teased Criminal Minds 200th episode is here.
