Despite the extreme popularity of King's Candy Crush Sage, the game was crushed on Monday by Pretty Simple's Criminal Case which was picked by Facebook as the game of 2013.

In selecting the winner, the most popular social media site considered several factors such as player ratings, quality, monthly and daily active users, commercial success and the Web site's opinion on the game's innovation and creativity.

With 100 million monthly active users, lesser than Candy Crush, Facebook opted for Criminal Case because "The game maintains the highest possible player ratings for quality ... It's the hallmark of a top quality game ... and [Pretty Simple] succeeded in inventing a really new experience on the platform," CNET quoted Dan Morris, head of Facebook's North American games partnerships.

However, he acknowledged that the choice of Criminal Case does not place doubts or diminish the success or importance of Candy Crush.
