Chelsea reinforced its seriousness securing the employment of Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno, after it sent out European scout Mick Doherty to monitor the performance of the 21-year-old, who could possibly take the place of the ageing Ashley Cole.

The defender made his debut for the Spanish national men's team in October, while establishing himself as a familiar face for the Los Rojiblancos in the La Liga.

He may be considered as a top-class player as Real Madrid, which are willing to part ways with Fabio Coentrao, and Manchester United, which also needs a long-term replacement for the outgoing Patrice Evra, are known to be his avid suitors.

At any rate, Chelsea and its rivals may have to shell out, at least, £25millon, which is Moreno's buy-out clause, in January.

A viable choice or not, the fact remains that Moreno is still eligible to play in the Champions League, should any of the aforementioned clubs pursue him.
