Apple's iOS 9 recorded an impressive adoption rate but latest figures suggest that Android remains the leading operating system in the world. According to Google's new CEO Sundar Pichai, who unveiled the Nexus 6P and LG Nexus 5x on Tuesday, Google's mobile OS is the most widely used operating system, posting 1.4 billion active users with 300 million on Lollipop.

Apple's record says it has sold more than one billion iOS devices starting 2007 while Microsoft is currently on track to hit the target by 2018. Both companies have nothing on Google though, with recent figures showing Android has 400 million more active users now compared to the one billion users it announced in June 2014.

This 1.4 billion users is also 900 million more compared to the stats announced mid 2013. According to a report by CNET, Pichai attributed the boom of Android to emerging markets like Indonesia and Vietnam.

"These are people adopting a smartphone for the first time," said Pichai. "We try to push the state of the art and the state of computing."

Chromecast, on the other hand, has gone beyond the 20 million mark for global sales. Additionally, there are already around 10,000 companies using Android for Work. This has allowed companies to manage and secure Android devices to connect with corporate data.

In addition to the statistics, Google has also unleashed a new mobile operating system: the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. The new update’s features include contextual assistance, App permissions and web experience. Contextual assistance is one of the stand out features as it allows people to access other features of the phone without having to leave what they're doing (whether on a website or in an app). Users just need to touch and hold the home button.

Google’s Android 6.0 update is expected to roll out next week. Availability may vary per region and carrier.
