Along with the ultra-thin profile, Apple has also improved the display of the recently released iPad Air 2. This includes a unique construction where the air gap between the screen and the cover glass is closed out. Other significant improvement over the predecessor is the anti-reflective coating to bring down the glare, when in places with bright/ambient light. The Apple Mini 3, on the other hand, did not go through any respectable change and the recent report clearly shows the device lags behind many worthy competitors.

Apparently, Ray Soneira of Display Mate Technologies has tested the anti-reflective coating and he finds it to be a note-worthy enhancement that elevates the iPad Air 2 above other tablets. However, when it comes to performance in general, rivals scored better than the iPad, reports MacRumors.

In Ray's own words, "A major innovation for the iPad Air 2 (that is not fully appreciated) is an anti-reflection coating on the cover glass that reduces ambient light reflections by about 3:1 over most other Tablets and Smartphones (including the previous iPads)." "And about 2:1 over all of the very best competing Tablets and Smartphones (including the new iPhone 6)," he added further.

It is worth noting that, competitors like Samsung, Microsoft and Amazon are selling killer tablets and smartphones with comparatively better colour accuracy, good viewing angles and improved power efficiency. According to Ray, the enhancements made in the latest iPad Air 2 is not enough to compete with the tablets from other OEMs sitting on the top of the ranking, especially when it comes to display. As readers might have guessed, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S sits in the numero uno position on the list.

In the case of iPad Mini 3, there is no change in the display features or the specifications from the Mini 2, except for the inclusion of Touch ID Fingerprint scanner on the home button. Also it is worth mentioning that, the predecessor iPad Mini 2's display was rated badly, especially for the colour range and accuracy related issues.

In specific, the 2013 Mini 2 came with a Retina display, however, the colour range was only 62 percent, while others have moved on to a full colour ambit. The latest iPad Mini 3 maintains the same 62 percent, however, the anti-reflection coating and gap-less construction seen in the latest iPad Air 2 is missing in the Mini 3.

Lastly, this is what Ray Soneira has to say about the iPad Mini 3 "For a company like Apple that prides itself on producing great products, the iPad mini 3 is embarrassingly mediocre and way overpriced." Notably, the Mini 3's price starts at $399, whereas the high-performing iPad Air 2 comes for $100 more than the compact device.
