Recent reports state that the upcoming Apple iPad Air 2 will be the thinnest tablet in the available lot. Apparently, the much-thinner profile is achieved by getting rid of the mute and rotation lock switch seen in most of the Apple iPad models. Removing the aforementioned switch clears 0.5 mm out of the tablet.

In addition to the thinner profile, the Apple iPad Air 2 will also come with slightly recessed/indented volume controls. Also, the microphones will be located on the rear of the device, alongside the camera. In specific, one of the microphones will be positioned to the left of the main camera, whereas the second one will sit comfortably to the right of the camera unit, according to Phone Arena.

Moreover, the iPad Air 2 will house a 9.7-inch fully-laminated display and there will be three-colour choices to choose from, namely gold, black and silver. The device will be powered by Apple's A8 chipset and will be backed by 2 GB of RAM. Also, the fingerprint sensor (Touch ID) will be engraved on the home button, and Apple Pay service will also be included. However, there will be no NFC support. Therefore, the Apple Pay service cannot be fully utilised in the upcoming iPad Air 2. In any case, trying to make the 9.7-inch iPad to pay for a cuppa sounds ridiculous. As Phone Arena points out, the mobile payment system will be limited to online purchases, unlike the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

When it comes to camera, there will be an improved 8 MP primary unit, instead of the 5 MP unit seen in the current-generation iPad Air. Furthermore, if reports are true, the 16 GB iPad Air 2 variant will not be available. Alternatively, the 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB models can be availed.

The Apple iPad Air 2 and the Apple iPad Mini 3 will be launched on October 16 in a special event inside Apple's Town Hall. Apart from the two iPad models, Apple will also launch several iMac variants with Retina display, a new Mac OS X version and some of the updated software products like iMovie, FCP X and more, according to The Michael Report.
