Google has renamed its Life Sciences division “Verily”. This independent entity was included under the umbrella of newly formed parent company Alphabet earlier this year.

After the rebranding, Google launched a new website, verily.com, which is now live. The word ‘verily’ means truly or certainly.

The website said Verily’s mission is “to bring together technology and life sciences to uncover new truths about health and disease”. Verily aims to integrate the best of Google’s technology, heritage and expertise from different fields of study. Google also introduced a new video (see below) to reach out to people.

In its venture into health and medicine, the Silicon valley tech giant will shift its focus away from conventional medical technologies. CEO Andy Conrad said Verily’s focus is a shift “from reactive to proactive, from intervention to prevention”.

“Only through the truth are we going to defeat Mother Nature”, added Conrad.

The main focus of Verily will be on understanding, detecting, preventing and managing disease. Ground breaking ventures of Google's Life Sciences unit to date include smart contact lenses, health-tracking wearables and molecular-level wearables.

Google Life Sciences also worked on health projects to help people with diabetes. The team has been working on a bandage-sized glucose monitor able to read real-time glucose levels, reports The Verge.

Advanced research tools and unique technical expertise at Verily will help it achieve its goals. The unit will collaborate with hospitals, government, academic centers, medical societies and patient advocacy groups to apply technology to medicine.
