The first official trailer of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” revealed a new lightsaber design, wielded by a hooded figure. A new report suggests that the new design may have been influenced by the advice of Apple’s senior vice president.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is being directed by J.J. Abrams. According to a report by TheNewYorker, Apple’s senior vice president Jonathan Ive had a few “very specific” suggestions about what the new lightsaber should look like in the new movie. The director reportedly responded to the suggestions by saying that Ive’s thoughts would be reflected in the movie.

Jonathan Ive reportedly suggested that the new lightsaber should be “less precise” and also “more spitty.” The report goes on to quote him saying that the new lightsaber should be “more analog and more primitive” and that the design should give an “ominous” impression to the viewers.

The new lightsaber in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” resembles a cross-guard sword from the medieval period. Apart from the main beam in the centre of the lightsaber, there are two additional smaller beams at the hilt.

The new lightsaber design has been a subject of much debate among the fans since the trailer came out. Numerous videos of experts in the field have appeared online. Some experts have praised the producers for coming up with something new to get the fans excited, while others have criticised the new design for its lack of practical use during combat.

The argument against the new lightsaber design is that the two smaller beams at the hilt could harm the wielder during combat. It has been pointed out that during combat, an opponent’s lightsaber could slice through the part where the main beam and the smaller beam join together.

It is still unclear who will be wielding the new lightsaber in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The hooded figure in the trailer reveals the new lightsaber when the voice-over in the video talks about the “dark side.” The new movie will mark the “awakening” of the Force on both the dark side as well as the light side.
