After a brief sojourn to the U.K. to oversee development of “Star Marine,” the first-person shooter module component of “Star Citizen,” Chris Roberts is back at U.S-based developer, Cloud Imperium Games. Upon his return, Roberts has divulged details about the game’s next major update, promising fans that the game will launch in a far more complete state than “Arena Commander.”

In a new blog post on the “Star Citizen” website, Roberts explains that much like “Arena Commander” introduced dogfighting to the game, “Star Marine” would bring the mechanics of first-person shooting to the universe. Roberts confesses that the ability to seamlessly integrating first-person combat and exploration into his games is a dream he’s had since he first created “Wing Commander.”

“It’s such an exciting idea; you might land your fighter on a carrier and then race into battle to repel alien boarders, or you might put down on a seedy border world and fight off pirates eager to steal your cargo! And on a broader level, it speaks to our long-time goal of increasing immersion; you’re no longer taken out of the action with between-mission gameflow menus or worse, instead, from the moment you start the game to the minute you exit, you’re living in and interacting with the ‘Star Citizen’ world!"

Roberts goes on to add that the team’s goal is to launch “Star Marine” in a more complete form than “Arena Commander” was released in. He adds that gamers can expect a level of animation fidelity and attention to detail that fans wouldn’t typically expect from a game in alpha. He also added that “Star Marine” would ship with Sataball, a zero-G sci-fi sports game the team have been teasing for a while now.

Despite the increased level of polish planned for the release, Roberts cautioned fans not to expect a finished game. While the team is working hard on the release, revisions, updates and expansions with be necessary to reach the team’s vision. The acclaimed director stated that the “Star Marine” development team would be providing updates soon detailing the nuts and bolts of gameplay even further.

As noted by Gamespot, Cloud Imperium games has some lofty goals with regard to “Star Marine.” The studio has approached the design of the FPS module from the ground-up, rethinking basic systems, with the aim of providing a fresh and exhilarating experience for fans.
