As Google celebrates Franz Kafka's 130th birthday with a tribute in Google Doodle, let us also pay homage to the great literary writer by reading something not too serious but still 'kafkaesque'.

Fans of Kafka's The Metamorphosis can take a break from seriously reading the classic novella and pondering about existential absurdity. Instead, read one of Quirk Books' classic collection, The Meowmorphosis, a re-imagining of Kafka's most famous literary work.

Wouldn't it be adorable if the traveling salesman from "The Metamorphosis" turned into an enormous ball of fluff instead of a giant bug?

And so it begins:

"One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that he had been changed into an adorable kitten."

The first few chapters of The Meowmorphosis is almost loyal to the original but begins to turn into a different direction (leading to the hilarious side of the road) when Samsa left his parent's home to free them of the burden of caring and feeding for a large, charming kitten.

Author Coleridge Cook, which obviously is the fantasy writer's pen name, has Kafka's genuine voice and will make you believe that it could pass on as Kafka's original, only the latter has a penchant for the grotesque than the adorable.

The Meowmorphosis is just one of Quirk Books' many published titles integrating public domain literary classics with fantasy and other literary genres including zombies, robots, sea monsters, and in this case, a kitten. It's called mashup.

So if you're totally into kittens and not into Kafka, or vice versa, I strongly recommend you to read the book and you'll purr with laughter with "The Meowmorphosis".
