A rabbit abattoir in close proximity to Cowra is being pushed to shut down due to the rise in insurance and electricity expenses.

About 60 farmed rabbits are processed by Bumbaldry Rabbits each week and supplied to local restaurants.

The closure of the abattoir means that there will be only one abattoir licensed to process the animal in central west of New South Wales.

According ABC Online, Steve Johnson, the owner of Hillston facility, says that in Australia, there is no future in farmed rabbits. He added that there are several reasons directing to the matter. He said there is not even a single feed company in Australia that processes feed and there is not even one in Australia that makes pellet to feed rabbits on and then for the labour involved, it is not a viable proposition at all.

The central west New South Wales restaurants will need to find a new supplier for rabbits.

A local chef named Simonn Hawke said it is great to be capable to support local business while there are other alternative suppliers.

Hawke added that they have not really had much of problems. They prefer using locally clearly because it is more satisfying for people to experience the local product.
