“NCIS” Season 12 Episode 16, titled “Blast from the Past,” airs Feb. 24 on CBS. This week’s new episode keeps the focus on Gibbs (Mark Harmon), but “from the past.” A network promo video shows that 20 years ago, Gibbs worked undercover as a computer technician. DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) is amused.

Spoiler alert: This update contains “NCIS” Season 12 spoilers. Read on at your own risk if you have not watched the previous episodes.

“NCIS” Season 12 Episode 15 (“Cabin Fever”) ends the war between Gibbs and the Russian half-brother of Ari Haswari -- Sergei Michnev (Alex Veadov). Gibbs lets Fornell (Joe Spano) kill Michnev, in the name of their ex-wife, the late Diane Sterling (Melinda McGraw).

This week’s new “NCIS” episode dials down the suspense a notch. It also brings in the lighter side of everyone in Gibbs’ team. In the CBS-released NCIS 12x16 promo video, DiNozzo tells Gibbs he could not believe his boss posed as a computer technician decades ago. After all, the team has an entire drawer of old flip phones only for Gibbs.

Gibbs is “notoriously low tech,” says the promo clip, which also shows a skeptic McGee (Sean Murray). He does not believe Gibbs should be sent in another undercover mission. Abby (Pauley Perrette) thinks it’s “piece of cake.”

“A covert identity created for one of Gibbs' undercover cases 20 years ago resurfaces after a murder victim is found living under the alias,” says the CBS promo synopsis. “NCIS” Season 12 Episode 16 was written by David J. North and directed by Dennis Smith.

Appearing in this week’s episode are: Alan Dale (Homeland Senior Division Chief Tom Morrow), Linda Gehringer (Michelle Stark), Michael E. Knight (Leland Robert Spears), Curt Cornelius (Metro P.D. Lieutenant Cody Oaks), Adam Chambers (Robbie Hale), Boise Holmes (Security Guard), and Monica Lawson (Nurse).

Homeland Senior Division Chief Tom Morrow plays the NCIS director in Season 1. Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly) replaces Morrow in “NCIS” Seasons 3 to 5. Incumbent NCIS Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) takes the seat from Season 6 to present.

“NCIS” airs Tuesdays on CBS.
