Images captured by NASA's Curiosity Rover on Mars have sparked up speculations about existence of alien life in the universe. New photos claimed to be obtained by the same source shows what appears to be a fish fossil. However, a website named Snopes claims it to be a hoax.

The news about Curiosity Rover's "greatest discovery" on Mars was revealed by online publication named MSNBC.website. Even though the article has been removed, it can be viewed via Google Webcache. According to the report, NASA's Mars rover found fish fossil on Martian surface, and the news has been confirmed by NASA scientists.

The report notes that the NASA scientists have "collected samples and stunning images," and they are feeling positive about the discovery. The discovery reportedly was made when a 2.5-inch-deep hole was drilled into Windjana. The website claims that the scientists found images of what appears to be "fossilized remains of a fish-like creature," and this discovery has led them to believe in the existence of life on Mars from "millions of years ago."

The publication also quoted statements from NASA's chief scientist Dr. Elle Stafon. "This is extraordinary news for the scientific community. We've found minute evidence of prior life before but nothing as concrete as this," reads the statement by the Stafon as claimed by MSNBC.website.

Meanwhile, Snopes.com a website dedicated to debunk rumours, dug deeper to find out the truth. According to the aforementioned publication, the claims about NASA discovering fish fossil on Mars are "False." It is noted that the image claimed to be from Mars is a "doctored version" of an original image captured by Curiosity Rover, posted on NASA's JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) website. The original picture reportedly has no traces of fish fossil.

Also, it is said that the statements by NASA scientist are fake and fabricated by the publication. Readers are advised to pay attention to the name that resembles the daily news publication's name MSNBC.com, in an attempt to appear authentic and credible. Snopes states that MSNBC.website is one of the many "fake news website, spreading sensational, made-up stories on social media outlets."

Meanwhile, it is known that Curiosity Rover has contributed widely to the study of Mars surface and environment. Inquisitr notes that since the landing of Curiosity on Mars in 2012, the rover has made some actual and intriguing discoveries that have led scientists to delve further in the possibility of existence of life on the red planet. This includes the discovery of a creek bed on the surface of the planet as noted by Space.com.

Previously, in November, YouTube user Paranormal Crucible posted a video consisting of images said to be from NASA website that showed what appeared to be "white ball of light" moving on Mars. The description of the video showed that the anomaly was taken by Sols Front Hazz Camera of the rover. This led to rampant speculations. In its report, Examiner noted that if the mysterious light is not natural phenomenon, then it is "artificial in its origin." However, these are mere speculations, lacking verified scientific account. Thus the finding remains unverified.
